Paintball is one of the fastest growing extreme sports in Nigeria and the world at large. The game which is very competitive involves team shooting sport where each team players of the game are to eliminate other opponents from the game by hitting them with the dyed spherical filled gelatin capsules (“paintballs”) that breaks when shot at the opponents.
The paintballs are generally shot using low-energy weapon called the paintball marker “paintball gun” which is powered by a compressed air (nitrogen) or carbon dioxide.
The paintball sport formally serves as a recreation game during the 1980s before the game became frequently played at a normal sporting level with more organized competition inclusive of professional teams, players and major tournaments.
The paintball sports technology has since then been used to supplement the military force, security organizations and paramilitary training among others. The paintball gun used in the game can play a role in nonlethal suppression of dangerous objects and riot response.
The paintball game sport officially became noticed in Nigeria during the 20thcentury after which many paintball recreational centres spurt up in many major cities in the country ranging from Lagos to Abuja and then port Harcourt. Paintball sport is a game which enhances teamwork, self-confidence, leadership skills and still serves as a major stress reliever with fun filed action and thrill.
It is often a fun filled game which can be played on indoors or outdoors activities varying the field size. Paintball field is usually scattered with artificial and natural terrain, which players use for tactical covering while playing the game, and goals vary depending on the game type as they are numerous paintball game types elimination, capture the flag and capturing of hidden objects are all types of the paintball game.
Paintball legality varies among regions and countries, the Nigerian paintballers are required to use barrel blocking safety equipment, protective masks for strictly game rules in order to avoid causalities among the players.
